8 Things to Know about iPhone 4

Besides being “beautiful,” what actually makes this iPhone different? After attending the unveiling and talking with analysts and bloggers, here’s our quick list of 10 things you should know about the iPhone 4, which goes on sale June 24, and costs between $199 and $299. Let us know if you have more questions and feel free to leave thoughts of your own in the comments section at the bottom of this story.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs says the iPhone 4, which debuted on Monday, is the “biggest leap forward” the iPhone has made since it was introduced in 2007.

iphone4

No 1. Multitasking

The iPhone’s operating system, which Apple calls iOS 4, got an upgrade along with the iPhone 4′s hardware. Among the most-awaited changes is multitasking, which means that the phone can run multiple applications at once. Want to listen to internet radio and check e-mail at the same time? Starting on June 21, you can with the iPhone.

Several other smartphones have featured multitasking for some time. So Apple is not blazing new territory here. Jobs says the company waited to add the feature until it could do so without sucking down too much of the phone’s battery life.

No 2. Video conferencing

In addition to the back-of-the-phone camera improvements, Apple also added a second camera to the iPhone 4, which faces its user. This can be used for video conferencing, which Apple and Jobs expect to be an emerging trend in mobile phone use. For more on this, see our story on mobile video conferencing.

No 3. Sharper screen

In his Monday keynote address at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Jobs sounded more excited about the iPhone 4′s new screen than anything else.

With 326 pixels per inch — four times that of previous Apple phones — Jobs says the iPhone 4′s “retina display” screen is years ahead of anything else on the market.

“Text looks like you’ve seen it in a fine printed book — unlike you’ve ever seen on an electronic display before,” he said. “Once you’ve used a retina display you can’t go back.”

No 4. Gyroscope

These phones are getting more and more intelligent about the world around them, “Jobs said”. That’s true of the iPhone 4, which has five sensors, including a gyroscope. What does that mean for users? Probably cooler games and apps. The iPhone 4′s internal gyroscope can sense motion on six axes. On Monday, Jobs showed a demo where he pivoted in a circle, and the stack of blocks in an app spun with him. The phone is basically more aware of where it is in the world, in relation to gravity, than it was before. It’s hard to say exactly what app developers will do with this, but likely something.

iphone

No 5. Thickness
The iPhone 4 will be the thinnest smartphone on the market, Jobs says. At 9.3 millimeters (0.37 inches) thick, it is 24 percent thinner than the previous iPhone model, the 3GS, he said. “I don’t think there’s another consumer product like this,” he said. “When you hold it in your hand it’s unbelievable.” The iPhone 4′s screen remains the same size as before, 3.5 inches when measured diagonally. That makes it smaller than some Android phones, which are its main competitors. But that may not be a good thing. As people watch more video on their phones, they’re demanding larger screens, some analysts say.

No 6. Camera flash

In what’s largely seen as a catch-up move, Apple added an LED flash to the iPhone 4′s camera, which lets mobile photographers shoot photos and video more easily at night.

No 7. Better camera

The quality of the iPhone 4′s camera is improved over previous models. The iPhone 4 shoots photos with 5 megapixels of resolution, compared to 3 megapixels before. That’s still not the best on the market. The HTC Droid Incredible has an 8-megapixel camera, for example. The Nexus One, another competitor, has a 5-megapixel camera, too. The iPhone 4 also shoots HD video, and a video-editing app called iMovie, which Apple will sell, allows people to shoot, edit and share videos with the phone.

No 8. Processor

The iPhone 4 has a new processor — the A4 — which Apple says makes the phone faster than competitors and faster than the processor in the iPhone 3GS. Apple debuted the A4 processor as part of the iPad slate computer in January.

But the iPhone 4′s capacity to store books, videos and music disappointed some. The high-end model stores 32 gigabytes of data, which isn’t any more than the iPhone 3GS.

New Apple MC340LL / A AirPort Extreme Base Station is the ideal wireless solution for home, school, and small businesses.
Some Wi-Fi uses the 2.4GHz wireless band, including the iPhone, iPod touch, and devices using 802.11b / g. Other devices can use either 2.4 GHz or faster 5 GHz band, such as the latest 802.11n-based Macs and Apple TV. Instead of choosing one of the bands, AirPort Extreme works simultaneously on both bands, and its multiband devices automatically use the best available bandwidth. This means that all Wi-Fi devices to obtain the fastest possible wireless performance and best possible range. And AirPort Extreme reduces the possibility of interference from appliances and cordless phones that use the 2.4GHz band.

Wireless printing through AirPort Extreme, it’s almost like having a printer in every room of the house or office. AirPort Extreme uses the Mac and PC compatible Bonjour networking technology to everyone on the network to take advantage of a centralized printer. Wirelessly, of course. (Wireless printing over USB requires a compatible printer and Mac OS X 10.2.7 or later or Windows XP (SP3) or Windows Vista (SP1).)

Configuration is as simple as connecting the printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme base station and add it to the list of printers on your Mac or PC. That’s it!

And because Apple Magic Mouse is wireless, you can venture beyond the confines of your desk. A quick film on / off switch helps conserve battery power while the magic mouse goes into her purse. Even when you’re in, Apple Mouse Magic manages power efficiently, by detecting periods of inactivity automatically.

Multi-Touch technology from iPhone and iPod touch introduced an innovative way to interact with its content. Magic Mouse, with its multi-touch surface, does the same for your Mac Using gestures, it’s like you’re playing what’s on screen. For example, slip through web pages in Safari gives you the feeling of thumbing through the pages of a magazine. And the Magic Mouse scrolling is not your daily travel. It supports the movement of movement (similar to the iPhone and iPod touch), where speed of movement is dictated by the speed or slowness with which to make the gesture.

Key Features

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Experience improved energy efficiency and improved multitasking with the 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which also offers an ultra-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system’s performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The hafnium-infused circuitry–which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors–conserves even more energy. With a substantial 3 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Graphics Processor
The Mac mini features the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor for up to five times better graphics performance than its predecessor, and its dual display support can drive two Apple or third-party displays with Mini DisplayPort or DVI connections. The NVIDIA GeForce 9400M shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory. You’ll notice the difference when you work with high-resolution photos and high-definition video, where graphics-intensive features in iPhoto and iMovie are smoother. And 3D game play–from Spore to Call of Duty–is faster and more responsive.

Wireless Connectivity
The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it’s also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

As you might see, touchscreen phone interface is strongly making its way as the main control scheme in the majority of smartphones and even regular cell phones. While it was used in mobiles prior to iPhone, Apple showed the world that touchscreen interface can be used as an easy and original alternative to regular buttons. Even if you are an anti-Apple fanatic, it is hard to disagree that iPhone, with all its flaws, was a big step forward in user interface – with many other companies now adopting the same control scheme as iPhone’s thumb control. The idea of using stylus as a needed part of interaction between user and his gadget becomes more and more outdated nowadays, with devices like iPhone approving that touchscreen can be controlled by only your thumbs, with no stylus at all.

Looking as Apple making step after step to dominate the market with its upgraded iPhone 3G, companies like HTC and SonyEricsson decided to renew their device lineup and to produce some interesting iPhone rivals. And while HTC already made many attempts to compete with iPhone with its Touch lineup, many of them don’t came even close to the iPhone. They lacked iPhone’s sleek user interface, its big and bright screen and many more. Now, both HTC and SonyEricsson understood that to make a powerful iPhone rival they must focus on multimedia side of their devices. So, recent products from these companies, HTC Touch HD and SonyEricsson XPERIA X1, were made with all those things in mind. And in this comparison we would like to describe and compare all of those three touchscreen smartphones: iPhone 3G vs. HTC Touch HD vs. SonyEricsson XPERIA X1.

Appearence

Design is a very questionable point of comparison, but at least we can describe the exterior looks of these devices. All three phones were made in black colors, with iPhone you can choose between black and white back panels though. Sizes are almost completely the same, with X1 being the thickest (16.7 mm), iPhone 3G – tallest (115.5 mm) and Touch HD – widest (62.8 mm). HTC Touch HD is heaviest than others (146.4 g). Complete specifications are:

Touch HD – 115 x 62.8 x 12 mm; 146.4 g
XPERIA X1 – 110 x 53 x 16.7 mm; 145 g
iPhone 3G – 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm; 133 g

Unlike iPhone and HTC Touch, XPERIA X1 is a slider, with full QWERTY keyboard hidden under the screen. It is slightly curved when opened, no idea if this is only a design move or somehow improves usability. iPhone traditionally lacks any navigational buttons, so does the Touch HD. However, SonyEricsson devise has a full set of front buttons, which are shaped in triangles (somehow resembling Nokia Prism) – two soft keys, dial / reject, button for opening Start menu, Ok / close and navigational button in center.
Overall, all three smartphones look stylish and interesting, so it is only a matter of taste which one has better design.

Hardware

Competition gets harder when it comes to the hardware side. Let’s begin from the part that is the biggest in all of these gadgets – screen. XPERIA has the smallest screen size – it is only 3-inched versus 3.5-inched iPhone screen and 3.8-inched screen of Touch HD. This is probably because XPERIA has many buttons on the front panel which took the useable space from the screen. Both XPERIA and Touch HD share the same WVGA resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, with iPhone in the back – its resolution is only 480 x 320 pixels. However, there is only a small difference in image quality, because of the same display physical size. On the Touch HD and XPERIA small fonts are more readable and picture looks sharper than on the iPhone – but in terms of colors and brightness they are almost completely equal. Needless to say, each phone supports wireless internet over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, 3G networks and they all has built-in GPS. Audiophiles will be happy to see that all of competitors have 3.5 minijack connector, so you can connect any type of headphones and listen to your favorite music in full quality. iPhone, just like all Apple products, lacks in FM radio support, which is present in both XPERIA X1 and Touch HD (RDS support included). Unlike XPERIA and Touch HD, iPhone has no ability to expand its memory with memory cards, so it is limited to its factory 8 or 16 GB. Touch HD and XPERIA has no such huge built-in storage capacity, but with microSD and SDHC support it is not a big issue – memory can always be expanded up to 32 GB. Among competitors, Touch HD has the most advanced camera – 5 megapixels with autofocus, XPERIA X1 has 3 megapixel camera, when iPhone’s camera has only 2 megapixel resolution. When it comes to camera, iPhone’s abilities are very limited – no video recording, no autofocus, only geotagging – feature, presence of which in XPERIA and Touch HD is still unknown. iPhone also has accelerometer and ambient light sensor – it is uncertain, do Touch HD and XPERIA X1 have those features (taking in consideration HTC Diamond had accelerometer, we consider that Touch HD will have it too, no word about XPERIA). Both XPERIA and Touch HD have 256 MB of RAM, which will be enough for multi-tasking and heavy applications, both have powerful processors – 528 MHz Qualcomm (Dual ARM cores) CPU. iPhone’s hardware specs aren’t so full, it is known that it is powered by 667 MHz ARM processor which is underclocked to increase battery life. So, iPhone may have more advanced hardware, but if it isn’t used, who cares?

Software

Apple recently made a wise choice to allow its smartphone to launch third-party applications and games. However, users are limited with App Store support, so if the application is not in the App Store, there is no way to launch it on your iPhone except for hacking it out. Hacks are already available, being called “jailbreak”, and they allow users to run any application they want without Apple’s digital signature. This limits the number of apps, but there already is a big amount of them available, from service applications to fun games. XPERIA X1 and Touch HD both run on the Windows Mobile 6.1, which is an open platform and does not have any limitations – so you can easily code an app by yourself and launch it on your device with no worries. There already is a huge amount of WM applications and games, far larger than on the iPhone today. Although both devices are made on one version of Windows Mobile, their interface is completely different. HTC Touch HD uses TouchFLO 3D interface – made by HTC, it brings all needed functions in one place, and making controlling your device with fingers an easy task. TouchFLO debuted in first Touch model, and now it evolved in a big shell-like application that significantly increases usability of WM. SonyEricsson programmers also wanted to have some unique interface features, so they invented XPERIA – such name belongs to interface smartphone is using. Main feature of it is its ability to use panels, which are like several virtual desktops, and you are able to switch between them in any time you like, in a very interesting and eye-appealing method. It increases productivity, and removing the need in task manager – all those panels are like a different tasks launched and working simultaneously. Big amount of RAM and powerful CPU makes using this interfaces a snap, so in the battle of Touch HD vs. iPhone interface and XPERIA X1 vs. iPhone interface there will be no clear winner. Although changes made by programmers of both companies are significant, Windows Mobile remained an OS that is not very easily thumb-controlled. Many programs still require stylus, so you can’t eliminate the need in this thing, no matter how good your shell is. In contrary, iPhone’s version of Mac OS X is made especially for thumbs, so you will never need a stylus to work with this phone. Touch HD and XPERIA X1 come with a standard package of WM apps included, such as Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer and Office Mobile. Office Mobile, although quite limited, offer a possibility to view and edit your documents on the go. iPhone lacks in such activities, however, there is a chance of Office App available in the App Store – for a reasonable price of course. Multimedia capabilities of these devices is almost completely the same, they can play almost any type of media files. iPhone is more limited on this side due to close platform, there are plenty of players for Windows Mobile, with help of which almost every file format can be easily played. Also, Touch HD and XPERIA X1, thanks to their powerful CPUs, can play movies in the full resolution even without need to convert them into their native one – just copy it on the card and watch, so in a battle of these phones vs. iPhone this is a major advantage. However, iPhone has perfect iTunes integration, easily syncs with it and taking advantage of all features it has. Microsoft has made a Windows Media Player sync support for all Windows Mobile devices, but it is made too simple and has a limited abilities opposed to iTunes. In any case, Windows Mobile is more preferred mobile OS if you want a huge application base, open platform and good MS Outlook synchronization. In any other cases, if you are looking for a sharp user interface, complete thumb control and iTunes integration, the choice is simple – its iPhone.

Conclusions

Hard to say at this moment, how successful will these models be, from these three competitors only iPhone 3G already exists on the market. New devices from HTC and SonyEricsson are very interesting and curious, but there are strong suspicions that prices on them will be sky-high. iPhone isn’t a cheap phone either, but it can be purchased with a cell phone carrier contract which make this phone times more reasonable in terms of price. In any case, the battle of iPhone vs. XPERIA X1 and iPhone vs. Touch HD will be tough, because they all have some advantages one over another. While iPhone bets on user interface and multi-touch, XPERIA X1 and Touch HD take advantage from Windows Mobile huge application base and open platform. Hard to say, which device is preferable, although Touch HD and XPERIA X1 have in our opinion far better multimedia potential – their huge screen and availability of multimedia applications make them a good choice for a portable multimedia center. Time will tell, how good they will be, so let’s just wait until HTC and SonyEricsson finally release their devices to the public, to test them more closely.

IPhone has been announced a few weeks ago and a lot of people were waiting for it to appear. It is one of the best smart phones in its class. However, there is another smart phone that is on the same level as the iPhone. Samsung F700 was announced later then the iPhone however it beats iPhone in several characteristics.

Samsung phones become better and better every day and the iPhone is almost the best phone in the world. These phones could be called gadgets because they are top leaders in cell phones industry.

It is very hard to compare and choose one of these phones if you want to buy a smart phone of that level. We will try to help you with that.

Which touchscreen is better?
The size of the iPhone’s touchscreen is bigger then the Samsung’s one and it measures 3.5 inches as opposed to Samsung’s 2.8 inches display. Size does matter nowadays: more and more we watch movies and view pictures using our phones and other portable devices. Sometimes it is crucial to have a big screen even if it involves increasing the size of the device. This means that you are going to have a bigger gadget.

The resolution of the screen is a very important feature that a smartphone needs to have because most of them have screen keyboards and it wouldn’t be so cool to type when you have tiny buttons displayed. iPhone’s display’s resolution is 480 x 320 pixels and it is very awesome for a phone. The resolution of the Samsung’s F700 screen is not much smaller and it is 440 x 240 pixels, besides it has a smaller screen.

Having a touchscreen on your phone is cool and convenient. These two companies have different solutions for their touchscreens. iPhone has the touchscreen with Multitouch function and Samsung screen has the Drag and Drop function.

See what is more suitable to you. I think that a bigger display would win the battle.

Connectivity

There is nothing much to say about it we just need to list you the features the phones have. iPhone works with Quad-Band GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900), it has EDGE, 802.11 b/g, and Bluetooth 2.0. As opposed to Samsung F700 it has Bluetooth and it is an advantage, we think.

Samsung F700 differs from iPhone with: Tri-Band GSM, 7.2 Mb/s HSDPA, and it has also EDGE. It does not say anything about Bluetooth; maybe it does not have it. It is not a good thing because it is one of the best ways to connect to other devices.

They both have Full HTML browsers so you will be able to get online easy and fast.

Keyboard

There are many discussions about the keyboards and which one is better. iPhone has a bigger display and it has an On-screen keyboard and has no real keyboard. On one hand it is more convenient to use a real QWERTY keyboard then the one that fits on a display and this is the advantage of Samsung F700 keyboard. However, on the other hand the number of buttons is limited if you have a real keyboard, as opposed to programmable keyboard of iPhone. So there are two sides of the coin in this case.

Camera

We do not doubt that Cameras and video capturing is very good on these phones however iPhone has done one not very good thing. They used 2.0 MP camera in their phone as opposed to 5 MP camera of Samsung F700. See for yourself 5 MP or 2 MP this is obvious that Samsung’s camera is better. Besides, Samsung was always making good cameras and good software to use them. It does not mean that iPhone has a bad camera but it is not as good.

Codec Support

Why are you buying a smart-phone? Of course you want to have good multimedia functions built in. And it is a matter of how many file types you can open, run or use with help of you smart-phone. iPhone has all the standard iPod files support and it does not differ from a video iPod in this case. However, Samsung can beat iPhone here because it supports more file formats: MPEG 4, H.263, H.264, Real MP3, AAC+, eAAC+ and photos.

Storage

A lot of storage space, that is what we all want to have. And there are also some differences and advantages of one gadget towards another. First of all iPhone has a drive for 4 GB or 8 GB and you choose what you want. It is pretty much space however, there are no expansion slots in it. So you will not be able to expand your storage space.

On the other hand Samsung F700 has micro SD expansion slot, but there is no information about the onboard memory so we cannot say anything about that. I think that it is more convenient to be able to use a memory stick but you have to pay additional money to buy it.

Both smart phones deserve to be called one of the best ones.

iPhone has advantages and beats its opponent with size and resolution of the screen, storage, google maps, push email, HTML Email, and of course it is still iPod.

However there are some cool things about Samsung F700: Better camera (5 MP), it supports more formats than iPhone, it has actual keyboard, and it has 3G connectivity.

If iPhone doesn’t appear in iTunes or you can’t sync iPhone

1. The iPhone battery might need to be recharged. For information about charging iPhone, see “Charging the Battery” in the iPhone User’s Guide.
2. If that doesn’t work, disconnect other USB devices from your computer and connect iPhone to a different USB 2.0 port on your computer (not on your keyboard).
3. If that doesn’t work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Note: If you enter the PIN incorrectly three times, you may need to contact your carrier for a Personal Unlocking Key (PUK) to enable your SIM card again.
4. If that doesn’t work, restart your computer and reconnect iPhone to your computer.
5. If that doesn’t work, download and install (or reinstall) the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes.

If you can’t make or receive calls, send or receive text messages, or access email or the web

1. Check the cell signal indicator in the status bar at the top of the screen. If there are no bars, or if it says “No service,” try moving to a different location. If you’re indoors, try going outdoors or moving closer to a window.
2. Check to make sure you’re in an area with network coverage. Go to your carrier’s website to see network coverage areas.
3. Make sure airplane mode isn’t on. From the Home screen choose Settings, then turn Airplane Mode off.
4. If that doesn’t work, turn airplane mode on, wait 15 seconds, then turn airplane mode off again.
5. Make sure to include an area code for every phone number in your contacts list that you use to send or receive text messages.
6. If that doesn’t work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Note: If you enter the PIN incorrectly three times, you may need to contact your carrier for a Personal Unlocking Key (PUK) to enable your SIM card again.
7. If that doesn’t work, there may be an issue with your wireless service. Call your carrier or go to your carrier’s website.
8. If that doesn’t work, restore the iPhone software. See this document or see “Updating and Restoring iPhone Software” in the iPhone User’s Guide.

Note: iPhone doesn’t support MMS messages. If someone sends an MMS message to your iPhone, it won’t be received.
If iPhone won’t turn on, or the display freezes or doesn’t respond

1. Press and hold the Home button below the screen for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
2. If that doesn’t work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
3. If that doesn’t work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If iPhone continues to freeze or not respond after you reset it

1. Reset iPhone settings. From the Home screen choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. All your preferences are reset, but no data or media is deleted.
2. If that doesn’t work, restore the iPhone software. See document 305744 “Updating and Restoring iPhone Software.”
