E-TEN is a prolific producer of Windows Mobile handhelds, and more often than not extra features like GPS and FM radio receivers are included as standard. That is the case with the M800, the company’s current flagship model, which seems to cram in just about every feature any PDA has ever had. As well as the GPS antenna, there is an application for making use of it which can send your current location identified in latitude and longitude as part of an SMS message.

3G with HSDPA support is included, and there is a front-facing camera for video calling as well as a back-mounted camera for shooting stills at resolutions up to 2 megapxiels. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both built in too, and if you are thinking of using the Wi-Fi or 3G for Web browsing, then the fact that the 2.8-inch screen displays 640 x 480 pixels might be worth knowing. Most Windows Mobile devices stick resolutely with 320 x 240, and the extra pixels here help make the screen clear and sharp.

A rarity in PDAs of any kind, the Glofiish M800 inlcudes a business card scanner. This is a combination of the built-in camera for photographing business cards and software for turning the captured card into an entry in the device contact database.

But even that is not the highlight. That has to be the sliding keyboard. These are becoming more common in PDAs, and E-TEN is no stranger to the idea. But to see one in such an otherwise well-featured device is still quite a big deal. We can’t help thinking that the user who needs to pen e-mails and edit documents on the go could be easily drawn.

E-TEN is generous with the freebie software too, which ranges from a redesigned Today screen that offers things like the current weather at the tap of a touch-icon, to a quick-launch tool for common applications and features, call barring and allow lists, backup utility and plenty more.

All of which makes the one serious and significant design flaw of this device very, very irritating indeed.

For reasons we really can’t begin to fathom, E-TEN has opted for touch-sensitive buttons on the front fascia of the device. This means that the Call and End buttons, softmenu buttons and the others that sit on the front fascia are all responsive to touch rather than being physical buttons.

Using them proved irritating as you can’t always be sure you have selected what you want, and it is easy to tap a button by accident. Coupled with the fiddly mini joystick that sits between them where we’d prefer a navigation pad, these buttons make for a very irritating time indeed.

The S70 and S50 models have integrated Real-time Traffic information service for navigating around traffic congestion. The S series navigators come with a free lifetime subscription. Traffic information is provided by the RDS-TMC (Radio Data System – Traffic Message Channel), an FM based radio signal, which provides alerts on known problems such as accidents, congestion and road works. The Navman S Series provides you with Route Traffic Overview to see in advance what’s ahead and select a re-routing option if considered necessary.

The Navman S series GPS navigators utilize constantly updated Tele Atlas mapping information. Feedback on mapping inaccuracies can be forwarded using Navman’s iUpData service.

Safety camera locations are available through the S series navigators and a free 12 month safety camera data trial is included. The S Series GPS navigators will intelligently warn of cameras based on direction of travel and your speed relative to the local limit at that location. The iUpData database allows motorists to enter details of any new or inaccurate safety camera locations.

We recently got sent the new Navigon 7110 which is the top of the range European version and for one it certainly looks the part with its sleek black finish and excellent 4.3” anti-glare widescreen display.
The car cradle has also had the cat walk treatment and though it looks as if it will never fit in your car due to its size and handle shape design, it worked a treat and has one of the strongest suction cups we have ever seen, you could walk up glass windows with a pair of these (though we would not recommend it).

Navigon are also one of a handful of companies that remove the multimedia functions to concentrate on the Navigational experience and we are big fans of this, after all you buy a SatNav to navigate and not to listen to music.

What you do get is a unique interface and a selection of innovative features, the interface in question is different because it contains a series of animated menu options, so with a click of a button the option expands and another click sees it retract, this has the benefit of cramming more options into a smaller space, whilst still making it easier to navigate around the options.

Thankfully Navigon have sorted out the speed issue with this (that plagued the older 7000 TS model) and it now works pretty smoothly.

Inputting of destinations is straightforward to a certain degree and the usual methods of inputting postcodes and address are catered for, but it lacks a full QWERTY keyboard so all you have is an A-Z keyboard and two other screens containing numbers and special characters.

Also if you input a full postcode you can’t then refine the search further by adding a house number or street, so you have to put partial postcodes to get the full mix.

However you do have the option of saving your destinations as voice commands, which you can then navigate to later from the front screen by simply speaking back your saved command.

We have to say that the majority of times this option worked well, but it depends on how clear your initial recording was as to how accurate it can be.

A Bluetooth hands free option has now been added to the 7110 which was missing on the older 7000 model, this allows you to use the device as a hands free kit and was simple to setup and use.

Interestingly you now have a security pin function which will allow you to lock your GPS device with a password, thus rendering it unusable unless the password is entered.

During testing we found the device to be quick at locating our position and maintaining a satellite fix, all route-recalculations were quick and efficient, but more importantly route calculations have been optimised which was another criticism of their earlier TS 7000 T model.

Also the TMC alerts and safety camera features worked a treat during our tests with the latter showing you both visual and audible warnings of approaching cameras.

There is no text to speech voice directions on this model, but voice directions were clear and precise and it does speak major ‘A’ road junctions such as ‘turn left onto the A5127’.

We also noticed that you can now enable a new scenic route option, which once activated is designed to take you around the longer, but more interesting routes during your trips – useful if you wanted to explore your surroundings, but don’t want to get lost.

Some of the best options we have saved till last, the first of these is the useful Logbook function which you can activate before each trip. Once you start to drive the unit will begin to record information, such as mileage and speed, then when you have finished your route the information gathered can be fed into Excel in human readable form, which makes it an excellent tool for company car drivers.

The next innovative features are a god send for those who struggle with complex junctions. During your travels when entering major junctions the software will guide you both visually and audibly into which lane you need to be in.

And if you are on a motorway, such as the M6 and want to join the M42 turn off, the Reality view can kick in which then switches to a graphical – real time -representation of all the signs and lanes, it then guides you once again both visually and audibly until you have got into the correct junction and lane.

The Garmin Nuvi series of GPS devices enjoys a fair number of fans. The Nuvi 660 and the Nuvi 350 have earned an average of 7.5 and 8.6 user ratings, respectively. And it’s not hard to see why. These ultraportable gadgets not only serve as navigation aids but also offer travel-friendly features, such as travel guides and foreign language dictionaries–all while delivering solid performance and ease of use. However, we’ve always winced at the jaw-dropping price tags.

Well, it seems Garmin heard our cries, as the company has released a new family of Nuvi devices that are more wallet-friendly. The Garmin Nuvi 200 series includes three models: the Nuvi 200 ($428.56) with preloaded maps of the United States and Puerto Rico; the Nuvi 250 ($482.16), which adds maps of Canada; and the Nuvi 270 ($599.99), which comes preinstalled with maps of the United States, Canada, and more than 30 European countries. For our review, we took a look at the Nuvi 200. This entry-level model boasts an even sleeker design and continues to deliver the same intuitive interface and accurate directions. It strips out some of the more advanced travel and multimedia tools to cut costs, but even so, we wish the price was slightly lower–more in the $300 range. Still, with a little shopping around, you can probably find a deal and for the money, you’ll get a solid portable navigation system.

Design
At 3.8 inches wide by 2.8 inches high by 0.8 inch deep and 5.2 ounces, the Garmin Nuvi 200 isn’t that much bigger than today’s latest smart phones or PDAs; in other words, it’s pretty compact. It helps that the GPS antenna is now integrated into the device, unlike older Nuvi models like the Garmin Nuvi 350, which had a flip-up antenna. And while the Nuvi 200 is probably a little too bulky to fit into a pants pocket comfortably, you’ll have no problem carrying it in a bag, using it on foot, or transporting it between vehicles.

A 3.5-inch (diagonal) QVGA touch screen dominates the face of the Nuvi 200. The display itself is bright and sharp with a 320×240 pixel resolution and features an antiglare coating. Unlike the Mio C220, we had absolutely no problems viewing the Nuvi’s display in various lighting conditions, including bright sunlight.

Aside from a power/lock slider switch on top of the device, there are no other external controls, so all commands are registered via the responsive touch screen. While we like the minimalist design, we think a volume dial on the side would’ve been nice. There is an SD card expansion slot on the left side, and the speaker and power connector/mini USB port are on the back.
